Purnkuti – NGO India

MY FUTURE IS NOT JUST A DREAM!

How Purnkuti and Johnson Controls India Helped a Woman Build Her Future.

Many women, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, often find it difficult to achieve their dreams. However, with the help of Project Dhara, an initiative that empowers women, many are finding new hope and opportunities. One such inspiring story is that of Shila Vanne, a 55-year-old woman, whoturned her dreams into reality with support from Purnkuti NGO and Johnson Controls India.

A Dream to Learn.

Shila’s journey began with a simple wish: to learn sewing. At 55 years old, she knew it wouldn’t be easy, especially as her nancial situation made it hard for her to afford classes. But her desire to learn was strong, and she didn’t give up. She found out about Purnkuti, an NGO that helps women learn skills and become independent. Purnkuti offers free courses that help women gain skills and start their own businesses. Shila decided to give it a try.

Learning New Skills.

At Purnkuti, Shila began with Vocational Training of Basic Tailoring. She learned how to sew basic clothes, and once she finished that, she moved on to the advanced course. Soon, she was able to sew many things, like salwar kameez, one-piece dresses, frocks, and palazzos. While learning, Shila also took Vocational Training of Cotton Bag Making from Purnkuti.
However, she faced a problem: she didn’t have a sewing machine at home. So, every time she wanted to sew, she had to go to Purnkuti.

A Helping Hand from Purnkuti and Johnson Controls.

To make things easier for her, Purnkuti, with the support of Johnson Controls India, gave Shila a business startup kit. This kit included a sewing machine and other tools she needed to work from home. With this new help, Shila’s life changed. Now, she could sew clothes and bags from home, without needing to travel anywhere.

Becoming Independent.

Thanks to the business kit, Shila started earning 10,000 to 12,000 rupees a month. This extra income was a huge relief for her and her family. At 55 years old, Shila was able to support herself and her household. She feels very proud of what she has achieved. “I am now standing on my own feet. I can earn my living and take care of my family,” Shila says.

Building Condence Through Stalls & Selling.

Beyond working from home, Shila actively participated in stalls and exhibitions organized by Purnkuti. These events helped her showcase her products, interact with customers, and improve her selling skills. Initially hesitant to speak with customers, through stalls she gradually built confidence in communication, negotiation, and customer engagement. “I was nervous at first, but now I enjoy presenting my work and interacting with people,” says Shila. These experiences transformed her into a confident entrepreneur, equipping her with both craftsmanship and business skills

The Impact of Empowerment.

Shila’s story shows how Project Dhara is helping women like her. With training and support, Purnkuti and Johnson Controls India are giving women the chance to build better lives for themselves and their families.
Shila proves that no matter how old you are, it’s never too late to learn, grow, and change your life.
